Museum Adventure Pass MAY 2012

As you may have noticed, your local library has not offered any of the Museum Adventure Passes for the past few months.  They are revamping the program for the FINAL YEAR.  Please check out this link to the Museum Adventure Pass to find out more.  They will start up again in MAY. 

 

For those of you not familiar with Museum Adventure Pass, it is a program that offers people either two or four FREE passes to local museums.  In the past, you would go to your local library, ask for a pass for one of the participating museums and get a coupon for two (or four) admissions that was good for about a week.  I don't think the DIA participated in the past year or two, but I believe MOCAD (which is FREE all the time, offered a discount at their store), Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Detroit Historical Museum were some of the museums that participated.  


This year, Museum Adventure Pass will be going digital and you will be able to ask questions, print tickets (for admission or discounted admission), and get reading recommendations.

Ferndale SOUP seeking Submissions

Last week, Ron and I finally made it to a Detroit Soup - and not just any Soup, their 2nd Anniversary Detroit Soup.  I heard about Ferndale Soup (starting this week) and saw an article in the Ferndale Patch.  Long story short, Ferndale Soup is looking for project submissions through today, Saturday (for this week's Soup).  

So the concept is simple and groovy.  You pay $5.00 for soup, bread, and a vote.  About four individuals or groups present their fabulous idea about Detroit (or Ferndale, or nearby), you vote on your favorite idea, have some soup and conversation and by the end of the evening, the winner gets to take home the cash (up to $800).  Cool, huh?

Calling artists! Papergirl Detroit needs you!

Hello friends and artists!
A couple weeks ago I found out about Papergirl -Detroit on Facebook via DAM (Detroit Artist Market).  This project needs your help!  

Papergirl Detroit needs art, cyclists, a show venue, printing services, publicity, photographers (oh, I can do that!), and videographers.  Spread the word and make it happen!  


What is Papergirl - Detroit?  Well, read on my friend (same info as that on their facebook page).

Papergirl was founded in Berlin by Aisha Ronniger and has been carried out once a year in the summer since 2006. It began as a response to a tightening of German graffiti laws that equated putting up posters in public spaces with graffiti spraying. This is the San Francisco division of that same project.

Papergirl is distributed like a newspaper, but not edited or printed like it; it consists of art pieces which are rolled up together. All the artwork is shown in a gallery setting before distribution. Contributions are sent in by mail or handed in personally and are later included in the art rolls.

There are no guidelines as to quantity or format: zines, prints, drawings, paintings, photos, textiles, stickers, writings, etc. are all welcome. Each roll contains anywhere from 5-10 different works, meaning that each one holds a unique combination of art!

Everyone can participate by submitting art and/or by helping with the distribution. We don´t select pieces for Papergirl, everything that gets submitted is shown and distributed, so it´s the artist who decides what he/she wants to show and give away as a gift. 

Papergirl is an annual mail-art and delivery systems art project that collects artwork from all over the world and, in the style of American paperboys, distributes the art freely by bicycle to people in the streets of Detroit.
Mission
Papergirl seeks to bring art to the public like never before, directly and freely by bicycle.

The basic idea with the project is to bring art to our community in a new and exciting/fun way. We're into the idea of facilitating people being generous with each other, sharing ideas and energy with strangers. We like nice surprises.

We want to promote creativity, culture, and participatory activities among the people that live here, and/or beyond. You don’t have to be from Detroit to submit work!

This isn’t like walking into a gallery and buying art off the wall, this is making a connection, even if for a moment, with strangers and giving them something without asking for anything in return!

The world needs more art and kindness!

(as many or as few as you'd like)
-There is no selection process
-The art that is collected is photographed and put on our website with the details of the artist. (still working on this part!! No website yet!)
-The art is shown in an exhibition for the public to see (still working on this part too!!)
-The art is rolled up, and a band is put on the roll to explain the project to the "catchers."
-PaperGirls (and men and women who would like to participate can) take a bike ride together around the city with the rolls of art
-The rolls are given out at random to people on the street.
-We celebrate a wonderful project with the PaperGirls and anyone else who wants to join.
-We start to work on next year's PaperGirl.

What was I thinking?  I forgot to post on this blog about the Roots in Detroit Photography Exhibit!  Well, it's here.  The contest for local photographers to capture the essence of Detroit and its roots took place months ago.  The show is tonight, Saturday, August 13, 2011.  Hope you can make it. Interactive Art comes to Detroit with FIGMENT

Oh, How I love finding cool stuff in the internet.  Today, I found a job opportunity on indeed.com that was needing volunteers for FIGMENT Detroit 2011 August 6 on Belle Isle.  Check this out!  And, if you are not interested in volunteering, try and make it out to Belle Isle for the experience.  You won't forget it!

Free Yoga, Tai Chi, and Canine Club at Detroit Riverfront

Well, it's been about 40 years since the Detroit Renaissance Center went up and finally in the past couple years, the Detroit Riverfront is looking good and attracting people to come on downtown and walk, run, and enjoy!

I just found out about a few things that are starting back up for the summer at the Detroit Riverfront.  Check them out! They all start at Rivard Plaza 1340 Atwater (map).

Canine Club on Sunday mornings from 10:30-11:30 am.  Meet at  Rivard Plaza.  Get there a little bit beforehand to find free parking on Sunday behind Rivard Plaza.  Sponsored by Canine to Five Detroit Day Care in the Cass Corridor/Midtown area.

Opening Night at DAM

Northern Lights Opening Friday, April 29th from 6-9pm

The Detroit Artists Market proudly presents Northern Lights , an aptly-named exhibition showcasing the work of 20 artists from northern Michigan.  A unique opportunity for DAM, this exhibition introduces talented artists and works not seen before in Metro Detroit, and will surprise and enrich your notions of what “Up North” art can be.

The Northern Lights Exhibition will open at the DAM on Friday, April 29th with a public preview from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Join us for the afterglow at Northern Lights Lounge located at 660 W. Baltimore Street, Detroit 48202. Appetizers for the reception will be provided by Northern Lights Lounge and musical entertainment by Kresge Fellow Joel Peterson and Friends. The exhibition will close on Friday,  May 27, 2011.

Please join us on Saturday, April 30, noon – 2pm,  for a Gallery Talk at DAM with several exhibiting artists who will discuss their work, the unique characteristics of creating art in northern Michigan and the significance of this show.

Also Poet Jimmy Santiago will perform at DAM on Tuesday, May 3rd from 7-9pm 

Hear how poetry transformed award-winning poet Jimmy Santiago Baca from a young man sentenced to a maximum security prison stint, into a metaphor for the power of language and self-expression. The event is open to the pubic with a $5 suggested donation. Proceeds benefit Detroit’s 2011 Youth Poetry Slam as they travel San Francisco.

OK, so I'm running late on this post.  Art X is a variety of locations hosting visual, literary, and performance artists who have been awarded the Kresge Fellowship awards since 2008.  Opening night at MOCAD (Museum of Contemporary Arts Detroit) was full to capacity and I wasn't able to attend.

This Week in Art - 7th Anniversary

Thanks to my dear friends on Facebook, I learned about This Week in Art's: 7th Anniversary Show on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 from 7-11pm.  So that's tomorrow. 


If you are interested in submitting a piece of artwork, you can.  The catch is, the piece of artwork needs to be no larger than 7 inches in any direction.  I think I will add a tiny painting.  I don't have the proper materials to make it look truly professional, like, say, canvas.  But, that's where creativity comes in, eh?  Art needs to be in before 6pm on Wednesday.
