Fund Your Passion

Need some cash for your latest project?  There are several local, national, and international ways to raise funds.

Kresge Grants

Soup  Our local chapters include DetroitSoup
I originally posted about Detroit Soup in May of 2011, but it's worth repeating.
Have a terrific idea how to help Detroit & need some grant money?
  • Check out the DetroitSoup About page for information
  • Submit your proposal two weeks before the next soup dinner.
  • Come to the monthly dinner on the second Sunday of the month.
Or, if you want to support local ideas,
  1. Go to DetroitSoup
  2. Pay $5
  3. Enjoy soup, salad, and camaraderie
  4. Learn about four creative projects happening in Detroit
  5. Vote on which project to fund with the money raised from the meal that night.

Donations of soup, salad, and volunteering is welcome.  Contact them ahead of time to see what is needed this month.

You know what's funny?  This was in my draft folder from January 2012!  Well, better late than never!

Art in Detroit

logo

As many of you know, the DIA proposal passed during the primary elections.  Therefore, all residents of Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties have free admission (all special exhibits and films do cost money).

There are many other museums and galleries throughout metro-Detroit to visit.  Some are free, some do charge for admission.  Galleries usually do not charge, and sometimes they have special events for opening or closing nights or artist talks (usually on Friday evenings).

You can subscribe to Detroit Art Now to get weekly updates on Thursday for weekend events.  Sometimes they include call for artists too.Check out what's coming up this weekend for the holidays!

Photo: Salvador Dalí would be proud! The DIA is celebrating “Mustache Day” today through Sunday, August 5. Visitors who wear a mustache (real or fake) receive free general admission in honor of Dalí’s eccentric appearance. Museum-goers are encouraged to see Dalí’s “Soft Construction with Boiled Beans” as part of the DIA’s Five Spanish Masterpieces, and check out one of three performances of The Dalí Project—a puppet performance that explores Dalí’s embrace of the subconscious through various forms of puppetry—presented by Puppet Junction. Note: Performances on Friday and Saturday are appropriate for adults only; Sunday’s performance is appropriate for ages eight and up. Tonight’s performance begins at 8. See you there!

Teachers - free stuff

I was fortunate enough to learn about this fantastic organization called Operation Kid Equip over the weekend.  Teachers working at low-income area schools are invited to make an appointment to shop for free for their students.  If you have 28 students, you get 28 of necessary things for your students.  http://operationkidequip.org/

Like them on Facebook too!  https://www.facebook.com/okequip
Oh, and I just found out, they are sponsoring a contest.  Deadline July 24, 2012.  Details here: http://operationkidequip.org/about/policies/bts-contest-rules/

While I'm on a "Teacher" kick, here are some other things teachers will be interested in to help them out in their classrooms.

Kids in Need Foundation is offering a $25 grant to teachers for bulletin board making materials.  Apply at this link:
http://kinf.org/grants/grant_applications.php

SOUP ANYONE? Over $64,000 granted!
Detroit Soup offers micro grants to creatives for programs that will help others.  Everyone pays $5 for soup, bread and a vote.  Usually four people/groups present.  The idea with the most votes at the end of the evening receives the money collected at the door.  Often $300-600!  There are other SOUPS across the country.
Ferndale Soup started in 2012.  https://www.facebook.com/FerndaleSoup
There is a Soup in Flagstaff Arizona.  You can start your own in your town too!

Check into your local area at this link Sunday Soup: http://sundaysoup.org/

Back To School Sales are starting already!  Why?  Well, having taught in AZ, school starts in July there, so, national companies offer savings for families as early as the beginning of July.

In case you didn't know, there are two fabulous places to get discounted yummies.  At 13 Mile and Mound, you can find a local Entenmann's Bakery Outlet.  You can go to their website and enter your zip code to find the nearest Bimbo Bakery (I swear to you that's what it says!!!!)

The other yummy store in metro-Detroit is the Wonder Bread & Hostess Outlet.  They have outlets throughout the country - so find yours by entering your zip code at the bottom of their home webpage.
